Wafers recalled because of melamine contamination

A New York manufacturer has been forced to issue a nationwide recall of its wafer snacks because they could be contaminated with melamine.

In a release from the Food and Drug Administration, National Brands Inc., of Spring Valley, N.Y., has announced a national recall of 4.76- and 12.3-ounce containers of its Topaz brand Wafer Rolls.

Melamine is the industrial chemical additive used most commonly in plastics that has been linked to death, kidney stones and general illness in scores of Chinese infants. The chemical was added to infant formula to dupe inspectors into believing the product had a higher protein content than it did.

The wafers come in 4.76oz (135gm) metal cans and 12.3oz (350gm) metal cans in the following four flavors:

* Topaz Wafer Rolls with Chocolate Flavored Cream Filling Lot numbers L8085A, L8219A, L8245A
* Topaz Wafer Rolls with Hazelnut Chocolate Flavored Cream Filling Lot numbers L8085D, L8219D, L8245D
* Topaz Wafer Rolls with Vanilla Flavored Cream Filling Lot numbers L8085B, L8219B, L8245B
* Topaz Wafer Rolls with Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Cream Filling Lot numbers L8085C, L8219C, L8245C

FDA testing led to the discovery of the melamine. No illnesses or injuries have been reported as a result of the contamination.
