At least 21 people have contracted an antibiotic-resistant form of Salmonella poisoning in Colorado.
According to reports from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the victims have tested positive for the Salmonella Newport strain beginning in late June and early July.
Reports have linked the outbreak to a recall of ground beef on July 22 from King Soopers, which is responsible for numerous cases of Salmonella poisoning in several states surrounding Colorado.
Health officials believe consumers may still have some of the recalled ground beef in their freezers, explaining the ongoing nature of the outbreak.
Antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella have become more prevalent in recent months, a phenomenon attributed to poor hygienic habits in the food production process, and also the introduction of antibiotics in the livestock feeding process.
