Salmonella outbreak confirmed in Wisconsin; 26 cases but source unknown

A Salmonella outbreak has been confirmed in Kenosha County, Wisc.

According to an AP report, local officials have 26 cases of Salmonella poisoning, but few other details. Health authorities there are working with confirmed victims to determine a common bond between them.

Anyone who has suffered Salmonella-like symptoms recently is being asked to contact their local health departments to confirm a case.

Salmonella is most often spread through food. Based on numerous other Salmonella outbreaks, the current and future victims all ate the same food or from the same restaurant or cafeteria. The bacteria can be spread through contaminated foods, or through improper food handling.

The most common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning are often overlooked because they mirror those of an upset stomach: diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. These symptoms usually present themselves within 8 to 72 hours of eating a contaminated food.
