The Rhode Island company at the center of a Salmonella outbreak has identified the source of contamination.
Daniele International Inc., said yesterday that black pepper used to coat some of its Italian sausage products was contaminated with the bacteria. The company said it has contracted with a new company to receive pepper.
At least 200 people in 40 states have reported getting sick after eating some of these products. At least 37 of those people have been hospitalized.
Earlier this week we reported on a New England family suing Daniele International, blaming it for their infant falling ill to Salmonella poisoning.
The recall on more than 1.2 million pounds of salami was announced Saturday.
Daniele products were sold under the company’s name, and also under the labels Black Bear and Dietz & Watson. They were sold at numerous grocers nationwide, including Costco and Walmart locations.
