Queens company recalls Schmaltz Herring due to Botulism risk

A Queens, N.Y., company is recalling a single Lot of its Haifa brand vacuum-packed Schmaltz Herring because it was not eviscerated.

It is illegal to sell uneviscerated fish, according to Food and Drug Administration and New York state laws, and people who eat this product are at an increased risk of Botulism poisoning. Clostridium Botulinum bacteria are more likely to be found in the viscera of fish.

The recall includes Lot 168 sold by D & M Smoked Fish. The fish is imported from Norway and individually vacuum-packed in clear, plastic pouches. The Lot number and a Sell By date of 7/20/10 are marked on a label. This product was distributed to food retailers in New York state, but could be available elsewhere.

Symptoms of botulism poisoning are general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and difficulty speaking and swallowing.

No illnesses have been linked to this recalled Schmaltz Herring.
