Health officials in Illinois are trying to prevent a secondary Salmonella outbreak linked to Subway restaurants.
At least 46 franchises have been linked to an outbreak in May. Ninety people have tested positive for Salmonella poisoning after eating at Subway restaurants in the state.
Late last week, the Illinois Health Dept. said it would require food handlers at Subway restaurants to get additional certfications before being allowed to operate again.
Also last week, we reported on a potential source to that outbreak. The investigation into the outbreak has focused on the vegetables and lettuce that accompanies most sandwiches at the restaurant chain.
Restaurants affected by the outbreak have replaced entire supplies of produce.
The last reported case in this outbreak was on June 4. At least 25 of the 90 victims have required hospitalization, but no one remains there today. The youngest victim is 2 and the oldest, 88.
