A Lancaster, Pa., pretzel company is joining the ranks of those recalling some of its products because they contain the flavor enhancer hydrolized vegetable protein (HVP). Foods with this HVP could be contaminated with Salmonella.
According to a release from National Pretzel Company, all of its Honey Mustard Onion flavor pretzels produced since December are included in the recall.
The seasoning used for these pretzels contains HVP from Basic Food Flavors Inc., a Las Vegas company which found Salmonella in its batches of HVP and on manufacturing equipment at its Nevada facility.
No illnesses have been linked to this pretzel recall, or to any other product containing HVP.
National Pretzel Co. sells its products under several different brand names nationwide. The following products are included in the recall. Each product has numerous Use By dates:
HK Anderson Honey Mustard Pretzel Bites (3.5, 9 and 18-ounce sizes);
CVS Honey Mustard Pretzel Bites (18-ounce size);
President’s Choice Honey Mustard Onion Pretzel Bit (300 gram size)
Safeway Honey Mustard Onion Nugget (10-ounce size);
Sunflower Markets Honey Mustard Nugget;
and bulk packages of Honey Mustard Onion Pretzel Pieces, Honey Mustard Onion Pretzel Bites and Whole Grain Honey Mustard Nuggets.
Customers with any of those pretzels should return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
