The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that infant formula from China may be tainted.
The formula may be on sale at ethnic groceries around the country. The FDA said domestic supplies of formula are safe, despite the warning.
Several brands in China are thought to be contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in plastics. U.S. consumers are urged to avoid any formula products made in China.
Infants in China have begun developing kidney stones after ingesting the formula, Associated Press reports.
In the U.S., six companies are approved to make infant formula: Abbott Nutrition, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Nestle USA, PBM Nutritionals, Solus Products and SHS/Nutricia. The FDA said all companies do not receive any formula products from China.
Melamine was the contaminant that killed hundreds of pets last year when pet food containing it was purposely mislabeled and imported into the U.S.
Melamine gives the illusion that food has more protein when it is tested.
