More Prosciutto product recalled due to Listeria contamination

A Virginia company has become the latest to recall its supply of Prosciutto ham product because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Yesterday, we reported on a similar recall. Though it’s not been reported as so, alike recalls of a similar product typically indicates it is being shipped from a distributor already contaminated with the bacteria.

However, contamination could occur when it is re-packaged at a separate processing facility.

According to a release from the Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Inspection service, a Canadian Food Inspection Agency official was made aware of the contaminated Prosciutto. There, the product was distributed to restaurants and retailers.

The recall includes Various weight cases of “CASA ITALIA C.I. PROSCIUTTO BONELESS”. About 70 pounds of the product is affected by this recall.

The exterior of each case bears the number “665″ inside the Canadian inspection legend and the lot number “70.” A yellow sticker placed on the foil wrapped product inside the case also bears the lot number “70.” The products were distributed to retailers in the States of Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

It’s possible the product was available in other states, and could have been available at retail locations or restaurants.

No illnesses have been linked to this contaminated product.
