Merrick expands recall on Texas Hold’Ems dog treats due to Salmonella contamination

Merrick Pet Care is expanding a recall on dog treats it announced in early July to include 83 more cases of “Texas Hold’ems” treats. The treats may be contaminated with Salmonella.

According to Merrick, no illnesses have been linked to any Beef Filet Squares for Dogs (aka Texas Hold’ems) and that sample testing first spotted a positive trace of salmonella bacteria.

The expanded recall includes the Texas Hold’ems treats with the following product details: ITEM # 60016 LOT # 10127 BEST BY MAY 6, 2012. A July 2 recall on the same product included ITEM # 60016 LOT # 10084TL7 BEST BY MARCH 24, 2012.

A pet who has contracted Salmonella poisoning will become lethargic and may have diarrhea or bloody stool, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only stop eating for a short time before recovering but could be suffering from abdominal pains.

The products included in both recalls were shipped to distributors nationwide. The treats are sold in 10 oz. plastic bags marked with “Lot # 10127 Best By May 6, 2012″ on the top of the bag and on a sticker applied to the bottom.
