The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat frozen mamey fruit pulp marketed by two different companies.
According to a CNN report, regulators warn that eating frozen mamey fruit pulp – a Central American fruit used in many smoothie and fruit drinks – has been linked to Typhoid fever. Both La Nuestra and Goya brands have recalled all of their supplies and reserves of frozen mamey fruit pulp after products tested positive for the rare Salmonella bacteria (Salmonella typhi) which causes Typhoid fever.
Typhoid fever, as we reported last week, is not a common illness in the U.S., except among foreign travelers.
Both mamey fruit products marketed by La Nuestra and Goya are sold frozen. The outbreak has mainly been reported in western and southwestern U.S. states, but reports may be too sporadic in other states where mamey is not often found.
