FDA issues recall on sprouts

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall on several lots of alfalfa, onion and other gourmet sprouts because they could be contaminated with salmonella.

The sprout recall was announced shortly after health officials in Nebraska linked contaminated sprouts with the current salmonella outbreak in the state, which has sickened at least 24 people.

The recall affects SunSprout Enterprises Inc., of Omaha, Neb. The sprouts were sold to food distributors and restaurants in Nebraska and Iowa.

Packages of the recalled sprouts have a SunSprout label on it. The packages are 4 oz. They have “Best if Sold By” dates in two different styles and include the following dates: “30209″ or “MAR 02 2009,” “30409″ or “MAR 04 2009,” “30709″ or “MAR 07 2009,” “30909″ or “MAR 09 2009,” “31109″ or “MAR 11 2009,” and “31409″ or “MAR 14 2009.”
