20-year-old Stephanie Smith, a children’s dance instructor, has been in a coma since early October after contracting e. coli from eating ground beef she purchased from Sam’s Club. Her doctors medically induced the coma to stop her seizures, and they’re now trying to bring her out of the coma.
Her doctors aren’t sure how much brain damage she’ll have from the seizures, but they say her body seems to be recovering. Stephanie is finally off dialysis, and she hasn’t had a seizure in a few days.
She’s scheduled for an MRI next week.
Per a recent St. Cloud Times article, her neurologist says he has only been able to find five cases in medical literature of patients who survived a medically induced coma for longer than a month. Because Smith’s condition is so rare, doctors are unable to give her family any sort of prognosis.
