Dining hall closed at Michigan State; officials fear food-borne outbreak

A dining hall on the campus of Michigan State University has been closed indefinitely because officials there believe a food-borne illness has infected at least 50 students.

A number of students have fallen ill with similar symptoms – mostly flu-like stomach problems – in a short period of time. At least 28 Michigan State students reported to a local hospital in East Lansing, Mich., after they began experiencing severe abdominal pain and vomiting. At least 30 more reported to the Student Health Center on the campus of the Big Ten school. At least 16 students are still in the hospital, but no one is in serious condition, according to a campus spokesperson who told The Detroit News.

Health officials have not been able to positively indicate what is getting students sick and just closed the dining hall entirely to see if that shuts off the flow of students seeking relief from those symptoms.

This is the second food-borne outbreak, if this is actually confirmed, at Michigan State this school term. Another food-borne outbreak struck the campus in September 2008 after students allegedly ate contaminated lettuce at a food bar on campus.
