Alfalfa sprouts linked to Salmonella outbreak in Michigan

Health officials in Michigan believe contaminated alfalfa sprouts have led to at least 12 people infected with Salmonella poisoning.

This is the latest in a summer of Salmonella outbreaks which are blamed on tainted alfalfa sprouts. Investigations have revealed that improperly sanitized sprout seeds are to blame.

Growers of this popular produce also failed to sanitize the seeds when they were planted, further adding a layer of blame to the problem.

Still, despite the constant queue of recalls linked to contaminated sprouts, more and more have been able to reach consumers.

The Michigan illnesses were first detected on Aug. 17-18. Health officials there are still urging consumers to avoid eating sprouts until they can pinpoint the exact source of the contamination.
