U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn is asking that the owner of a peanut-processing company should be prosecuted for the salmonella poisoning of more than 600 people.
Peanut Corp. of America (PCA), which has filed for liquidation in bankruptcy court, is the under federal criminal investigation over the shipping of contaminated peanut products.
PCA president Stewart Parnell knowingly shipped batches of peanut products after they tested positive for salmonella. He cited his Fifth Amendment rights and refused to testify.
Criminal charges are rarely brought in food contamination cases, but the senator is asking Congress to consider revamping federal regulation of food.
