PCA Shuts Down Second Plant for Salmonella

Peanut Corp. of America has shut down its Plainview plant, after test results showed that samples from the Texas plant tested positive for salmonella.

At least four different strains of salmonella were found by FDA investigators when they visited the company’s Blakely, Georgia, plant.

The salmonella outbreak stemming from PCA products have resulted in 1,845 items being recalled at a cost to industry of hundreds of millions of dollars.

The outbreak is linked to eight deaths and has officially sickened 600, 23 percent of whom have reported being hospitalized, in 44 states.
