Dagoba Organic Chocolate recalled due to Salmonella contamination

Artisan Confections Co. is recalling some of its Dagoba Organic Chocolate product because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Eating food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria can lead to adverse health side effects, including nausea vomiting and diarrhea. Some instances of Salmonella poisoning can be life-threatening, especially to the very young, elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

The recall includes Dagoba Organic Chocolate new moon Rich Dark Chocolate 74% cacao 0.32 ounce squares. Thirty-three cases of 0.32-ounce squares are included in this pull-back. They were sold online and through natural/specialty stores nationwide after Oct. 27. The affected products were sold from display boxes with the code code 37HLB11, UPC 10474-55509.

No illnesses have been linked to these potentially-contaminated chocolate squares, but it’s important to note that Salmonella poisoning is the least-reported form of food poisoning. Some studies find that only 3 in 10 people affected by Salmonella bacteria report their symptoms to a physician.

Artisan Confections, an Ashland, Ore., company, said these chocolate squares were produced by a third-party manufacturer. A positive Salmonella test on a single sample of the Chocolate product prompted the recall, according to a Food and Drug Administration release.
