Cruise Ships See Sudden Increase in Norovirus Outbreaks

More than 400 passengers sickened by a norovirus on a Celebrity Cruise lines ship in mid-February was one of eight to hit cruise ships in 2010.

Data from the CDC show the number of norovirus outbreaks on cruise liners had been dropping over the last several years, until now.

Experts aren’t yet sure what to make of the rash of outbreaks, but they are not ready to raise the alarm and call it an epidemic.

Cruise liners have begun taking extra precautions to try to stop the outbreaks, including ships delaying boarding to allow crew extra time to clean between cruises.
