As many as 143 people fell ill following stays at Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark last weekend, the New York Department of Health said yesterday. Officials believe that Norovirus is the cause of gastrointestinal sickness at the park. It’s spread from person to person contact, generally through water or food.
The first illnesses were reported on Saturday, when young children became violently ill with diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps. Great Escape officials on Thursday continued to say that there is no evidence the outbreak is linked to the hotel and water park. The lodge has remained open, and the number of reports of people who stayed at the lodge and became ill has increased throughout the week.
The department is now conducting an epidemiological investigation, which studies how a disease or illness was transmitted, thorough interviews and collection of specimens that will be tested in a lab.
