Winn-Dixie recalls self-serve Gummy Bears due to possible metal contamination

Retail grocer Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has issued a “voluntary recall” on self-serve Gummy Bears sold in bulk at some of its stores due to the possible presence of “metal contamination.”

Winn-Dixie issued the recall this week but did not specify if any incident or specific finding led to the recall but said there have been no “reports of illness associated with product consumption.”

The Sunshine Assorted Flavor Gummy Bears were sold in a self-serve section of their grocery stores and available in bulk between Nov. 14 and Dec. 13. The stores affected by the recall are located in Florida and Louisiana, according to the recall statement:

St. Johns Commons – 2220 County Road 210 W, Jacksonville, FL 32259
Concord Shopping Mall – 11241 S.W. 40th Street, Miami, FL 33165
Pepper Tree Plaza – 5600 West Sample Road, Margate, FL 33073
Main Street Square – 7800 S. hwy 17-92, Fern Park, FL 32730
70431 Hwy 21, Covington, LA 70433

Winn-Dixie said the recall is being conducted out of “an abundance of caution” but any customer who purchased these potentially contaminated Gummy Bears should return them to the store for a refund.

Eating foods with pieces of metal, no matter how small, could be harmful and lead to injuries or illness. It is not known what type of metal would be contaminating the Gummy Bears in the recall but if it is swallowed, it could cause internal injuries.
