Surtex Foods recalls La Original string cheese due to Listeria and Staphylococcus contamination

A Los Angeles company is recalling its Oaxaca string cheese because it may be contaminated with two forms of food bacteria.

Surtex Foods Co. says no one has reported getting sick after eating “La Original” brand of its string cheese product. The company says the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and/or Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, according to an AP report..

Each of those bacteria could lead to serious food poisoning symptoms which may result in hospitalization. Pregnant women who’ve contracted Listeriosis have suffered miscarriages and still births.

The recalled string cheese was sold in 17.63-ounce clear packages. Surtex said it only distributed the product in California, but it is possible the product was sold over state lines by another outlet.

AP and Surtex have not provided any other product details on the recall.
