A New Jersey company is recalling its Quenby Hall Blue Stilton Cheese because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
According to a release from Schratter Foods Inc., of Fairfield, the company’s own safety testing spotted Listeria bacteria in samples taken for inspection.
The recall includes several Lots of the product, sold in bulk nationwide to retail locations. The product can be cut-down into smaller sizes for sale in retail stores
The company says its Quenby Hall Blue Stilton Cheese is sold in bulk (Round Half, 8.5-9.6 pounds) and in random weight wedge cuts (UPC 0813555010000 – label states “Imported by: ANCO Fine Cheese). The recall includes Lot number 019 through 034. Products in the recall have Expiration Dates ranging from June 15 to June 29.
No illnesses have been reported to the company as a result of consuming this cheese product. Schratter Foods said it has suspended distribution of this specific product until a source of the contamination is found.
Eating products contaminated with Listeria bacteria can lead to serious illness and is especially concerning for young children, the elderly and pregnant women. Listeria poisoning has been linked to miscarriage and still birth.
Early symptoms of Listeria poisoning include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
If unchecked, Listeria poisoning could require hospitalization or lead to death.
