An Ohio beef processor has been forced to issue a recall on nearly one-quarter million pounds of beef products because it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
According to a release from the Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, Tri State Beef, of Cincinnati, has issued the recall on 228,596 pounds of beef products.
The recall contains “Combo bins of Tri-State Beef Co. Inc. Boneless Beef.” The beef product included in this recall was shipped to other establishments for further processing. Those facilities are located in Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio, Iowa and Virginia.
Despite the fact that further processing, namely cooking, of the beef included in the recall would classify the product as unadulterated, the recall is still necessary, according to FSIS, because the product was “shipped into commerce.”
Beef affected by the recall from Tri State Beef has an Establishment number of EST. 1750 inside the USDA inspection mark. These products were processed by Tri State Beef from July 19 to July 21.
E. coli poisoning can lead to serious illness, hospitalization and death, especially if symptoms are untreated among certain people.
Children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems are most likely to experience the worst side effects of E. coli poisoning. Early symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms can lead to dehydration and E. coli poisoning has been blamed on some cases of kidney failure.
