New York company forced to recall Bologna contaminated with Staphylococcus bacteria

About 3,000 pounds of bologna products have been recalled due to a potential Staphylococcus aureus contamination.

Eating food contaminated with this bacteria can lead to life-threatening conditions among some people. To date, the products included in this recall have not been linked to any illnesses.

According to a release from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recall includes two 10-pound packages of “Price Chopper German Brand Bologna – Made with Pork & Chicken”.

Each package has the establishment number “EST. 5333″ inside the USDA inspection mark. These bologna products were produced on Jan. 5 at Zweigle’s Inc., a Rochester, N.Y., company. They were packed on Jan. 7.

The recall was ordered when FSIS officials determined that these bologna products were re-cooked following a problem at a Zweigle’s smokehouse. During the time of each cooking, safety inspectors determined enough time lapsed and conditions were right for Staph bacteria to grow.

Each recalled package has a white sticker with the package code “007″ and a Use By date of 03/08/11. Zweigle’s shipped the products to a pair of New York state distribution warehouses.

The USDA is compiling a list of retail locations which may have sold the contaminated bologna.
