Idaho company recalls Alfalfa Sprouts linked to ongoing Salmonella outbreak

An Idaho company is recalling Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts it distributes across the country because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

The Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts recalled by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC have been linked to an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella poisoning. According to a release from the company, at least 21 people have reported getting sick after eating these sprouts.

Though the company is based in Idaho and products were distributed for direct delivery to four distributors and retailers in Washington and Idaho, victims have been reported in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, New Jersey and Washington.

The following products and their identification numbers are included in the recall:

* Alfalfa Sprouts, Evergreen Produce, 4 oz. bag, UPC 8 38796 00103 7.

* Alfalfa Sprouts, Evergreen Produce, 16 oz. bag, UPC 8 38796 00108 2.

* Alfalfa Sprouts, Evergreen Produce, 5 lb. bag, no UPC.

* Spicy Sprouts, Evergreen Produce, 4 oz. bag, UPC 8 38796 00102 0.

* Spicy Sprouts, Evergreen Produce, 16 oz. or 5 lb. bag, no UPC.
The company says no tests have confirmed the presence of Salmonella bacteria in their sprouts but have enacted the recall because many of the victims have identified them as a food they ate prior to experiencing symptoms common with infection.

Salmonella poisoning can be fatal in some cases. Early symptoms of infection include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. If unchecked, some symptoms can escalate in severity, cause dehydration and lead to hospitalization.
