Frozen, crustless pb jamwich sold at Giant-Carlisle stores in Mid Atlantic recalled due to Listeria contamination

Pierre Foods is recalling 320 cases of its pb jamwich, crustless peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches, because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

According to a release from the company, the recall includes one Lot of the product sold at Giant-Carlisle food stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Eating foods contaminated with Listeria bacteria can lead to life-threatening conditions. Listeriosis has been blamed on stillbirths and miscarriages among pregnant women. Symptoms of Listeriosis include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Listeriosis affects the very young, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems most severely. It can require hospitalization and if untreated, can result in death.

The Pierre pb jamwich comes in a 12-count red carton and is sold in the freezer section of the grocery store. The product in question is stamped “Best if purchased by 03-11-2011” in the lower right hand corner. The UPC code is 7599921368.

The company is recalling the product after one sample of it returned a positive result for Listeria contamination.
