E. coli Prompts Ground Beef Recall

American Food Service, out of California, is recalling approximately 3,000 pounds of ground beef patties and other ground beef products because of a possible E. coli bacteria contamination. This is a Class 1 recall, meaning that the risk of serious illness is high. The recalled products went to restaurants throughout Southern California and may still be in their freezers.

What is E. coli?

The E. coli bacteria can be a deadly pathogen. It’s spread by consuming undercooked or raw meats, contaminated water, and unpasturized milk or juice. This contamination causes an E. coli outbreak. The very young, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.

Symptoms of E. coli

There are many symptoms associated with the E. coli bacteria. These symptoms may include vomiting, dehydration, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and even kidney failure.

The Food Safety and Inspection Services recommend that consumers safely prepare raw meat products by cooking them to 160 degrees F. A meat thermometer should be used to insure that the internal temperature of the meat is high enough to kill off dangerous bacteria.
