Chives recalled due to Listeria contamination

Goodness Gardens Inc. has issued a recall on a specific Lot of its Chives because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Eating food contaminated this bacteria can lead to Listeriosis, a potentially-fatal form of food poisoning. Listeria has also been linked to stillbirth and miscarriage among pregnant women.

According to a release from the New Hampton, N.Y., company, the Lot number included in the recall is 0201111. The Lot was distributed to retail locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Alabama, Illinois and Virginia. Portions of the Lot were also shipped to a wholesale company in Pennsylvania.

The recall was announced four days after the last available expiration date in this Lot (May 6). The announcement was made May 10. It’s unlikely these products are still on store shelves.

The Chives are distributed in plastic clamshell containers, either 0.25-ounce or 2/3-ounce sizes. They were also sold in one-pound bags and half-ounce twist-tie bunches.

No other products from Goodness Gardens Inc. is included in the recall. The contamination was noted by Connecticut health authorities during routine inspections.

No illnesses have been linked to the consumption of these Chives. Early symptoms of Listeria poisoning include high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
