Texas pizza restaurant blames sewage spill on contaminated water

A popular pizza restaurant near San Antonio, Texas, has been forced to close as authorities investigate whether a sewage spill has been causing its customers and employees to get sick.

According to a report at the San Antonio Express-News, Fralo’s Art of Pizza in Leon Springs was closed Friday by health officials after its water tested positive for bacteria.

On Monday last week, some customers and employees of the establishment began reporting symptoms of nausea and diarrhea. Officials this week are investigating whether a spill of 400,000 gallons of sewage may have infiltrated the restaurant’s water supply.

The restaurant owner closed his place on Tuesday last week and discarded all food items at the advice of a health official, according to the report.

The owner sent a water sample and it returned a positive test for E. coli bacteria. The restaurant relies on non-municipal water and must have it tested once a month to be sure it’s clear of impurities.

While the owner believes the sewage spill has something to do with the water contamination, a municipal official told the newspaper it does not believe the massive spill impacted any water wells nearby.
