DPI Specialty Foods is recalling certain Lots of its Mauri Gorgonzola cheese it sold to Costco stores in Colorado because it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
According to a release from the Food and Drug Administration, it is not known if this cheese is implicated in any ongoing outbreaks. Regulators believe this cheese is not linked to any of the illnesses tied to an ongoing E. coli outbreak in the Southwest.
The recall includes Mauri Gorgonzola cheese with Sell By dates of Jan. 13 and Jan. 14, 2011. Colorado officials discovered the presence of E. coli bacteria in the cheese during routine sampling.
Costco said it is identifying customers who purchased the cheese at its Colorado stores through their membership cards and notifying them of the recal.
E. coli poisoning presents symptoms common to other types of food poisoning, but more severe cases of infection could lead to a type of kidney failure known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
